Fine hairline cracks are common in stucco and usually not serious. Wider cracks, loose or chipped pieces, and areas that sound hollow when tapped point to damage that needs repair. If water is reaching the damaged area, the source needs fixing before the stucco does. That can mean a leak that needs roof repair, overflowing gutters, or poor drainage near the wall.
All cement-based plaster, stucco included, cracks to some degree as it dries and ages. Larger cracks can come from movement in the house or the ground under it, or from problems with how the stucco was applied. The Colorado Geological Survey lists cracked walls among the damage caused by swelling clay soils, and water soaking the ground near a foundation makes that swelling worse. Finding the cause matters as much as patching the crack.
The size of the damaged area, the cause of the damage, and the amount of refinishing needed all affect the cost. Any water damage behind the stucco has to be dealt with first.
